The rabbi of Vitebsk, 1914 |
After
this success he returned to his home in Vitebsk, where he found the beginning
of World War I. There he made sketches in a realistic style, such as "The rabbi of Vitebsk" (1914).
In
1915, Marc Chagall married Vera Rosenfeld, daughter of a rich merchant of
Vitebsk. From that moment Vera also became the heroin of his paintings, such as
"Double Portrait with a glass of wine" (1917) and
"Birthday" (1915-1923).
The
October Revolution of 1917 Chagall accepted with enthusiasm. He even two and a
half years was the Commissioner for Culture in Vitebsk, tried to organize
exhibitions, open museums and schools. But the constant ideological disputes
with local authorities forced Chagall move to Moscow. Here, he tried his hand
as a theatrical artist.
