In 1907, Chagall moved to St. Peterbupg where has got acquainted with Leon Bakst (which was then the most fashionable theatrical designer) and became a frequent visitor of his art studio. In those years, Chagall painted such paintings as "Dead Man" (1908) and "The bride in black gloves" (1909).

In 1910, with the blessing and on money of chuck Chagall went to Paris. Year and a half later Chagall took a room for his own studio on the outskirt of Paris, at La Rouche, where lived local bohemian. There Chagall met with avant-garde poets Blaise Centrarom, Max Jacob and Guillaume Appolinaire, expressionist Soten, colorist Delonei and cubist Jean Mettszingerom. This company has been fertile ground for the development of any art movement.

It was then that Chagall began to demonstrate and develop their unique artistic technique, the beginnings of which were manifested still in St. Petersburg. Within four years in Paris, Chagall painted, "I and the village" (1911), "Self-portrait with seven fingers" (1912), "Fiddler" (1912), etc. Often in his paintings appeared inconspicuous heroes handsome, with the eastern type of face and curly hair, in which is easy to find the author. Chagall several times participated in the "Paris art galleries Paris Salon des Independants" and "the Salon d'Automne".
